Argh! Curbed my rim!

Ok, I was an idiot and curbed my rim. It's kinda deep too. Anyone know a good rim repair place in SoCal? How do they fix curbed rims anyways?

Curbing your rim is scratching/denting/bending your rim. Generally, it's cuz you hit a curb. That's what happened to me. I was being an idiot and tried to turn into the gas station going too fast. I squeezed into the right/turn lane and misjudged the curb cuz I'm still not completely use to this car. It's my fault. I'm used to doing it on my old Civic where I could place it within a couple of inches (literally) of where I wanted it to go.

What did you do to your rim? Scratches you can buff out and dents you can have repaired. Usually, one shop will do it all for around $100.

err, it's sorta a cross between a dent and a scratch. Basically, I ran up the curb with my rear tire. Since it's a low profile tire and was at an angle (I think), the tire bent enough so that I ran over the curb with my rim. That gouged out a small chunk. And yeah, $100 or so seems to be the general estimate, give or take $20.

Man I know the feeling....I did the same thing on the front passenger side of mine(damn high curbs....maybe I need new glasses)plus I took a good size chunk out of the tire....no enough to warrant paying for new ones until spring though.

yeah, it was my beater so I totally thrashed it. Problem was when I got the BMW, I had to totally change my driving style which is hard after you've been doing it for 8 years.

codex, did you hurt the tire as well? cause that is what really scares me. when the rubbers are hurt they can quit working especially the higher the speeds are, and that is exactly not what one wants right?

hmm, when I go take it to get fixed, I'll have them check it out. The tire looks fine to me though. The hit created a flap of rubber about 1 cm long and 1 mm wide on that edge of the tire that kinda extends over the rim. There doesn't appear to be much scraping on the tire. It's still shiny for the most part. I think the rim took most of the damage but it doesn't appear bent.

Especially the sidewalls. That is where the most pressure is located during cornering and such.

exactly and as there is a crack in it i would be more than careful.

I've seen it before when you "curb you rim" and such that you can actually cut a chunk of the tire out. You really need to inspect the tire/rim carefully to make sure no damage has been done. Also if the rim has been dented or gashed, I would make sure the rim is true (balanced). This can cause instability and improper tire wear.

If the flap of rubber hanging is up against the rim, that is the protective barrier and should not be driven on........that is why my car sat at the dealership for four weeks waiting on a tire because the protective barrier had been compromised........
