engine rpm fluctuating while in neutral

hey guys!

i own a 96 318is.yday i noticed that after half an hour of driving,my engine rpm was fluctuating between 0 and 1000. it felt like it was choking. it drops real low like the engine is bout to switch off and then climbs back up...this keeps happenin till i rev it a lil bit over 1000 rpm.

ne idea wat could be wrong?looking forward to hearing from you guys! appreciate all the help!!

related to this topic there are usually words such as

- idle control valve
and
- vacuum hose

coming up. might be worth to have it checked

Tim's suggestions are real good, if it isnt those then maybe fuel pump, or your intake boot could be loose (the latter is highly unlikely)

i thought of fuel pump as well, but put it aside to leave it for others j/k

no actually i really put it to side as i thought that the car would die if he punches the gaz when the pump is gone or going to be gone. but any way, another good idea to start investigations.

Could also be air mass sensor, or any of the things that were mentioned in the previous posts. Need to get it checked out.

check the spark plugs. if they arnt firing normal that will also explain the fluctuation.

my car does the same thing. It's being like that ever since i've owned it.

bad spark plugs would also mean a quite noticeable loss of power and potential missfires. did you notice something like that?
