I am looking to purchase a 2001 330 ci with 128000 kilometers. Having owned a 328is that was much quieter, I am concerned about what it is, and if I should buy the car. The noise sounds sort of like a diesel, but not as loud. It is mostly noticeable with the hood up, and otherwise the engine is smooth with adequate power. Mike.

Sounds like the somewhat common VANOS noise or rattle. VANOS is the variable valve timing mechanism that significantly improves torque and horsepower. The general opinion is that it's usually not a problem, unless you notice a performance problem.
