Scratched My Rim...

I scratched my left rear rim about 30 minutes ago. I hit the side of the curb at the KFC drive-through (stupid narrow-ass curving drive-through pathway). I have two scratches on the outer area on the left rear rim, each is like one inch in size. I know we talked about rim repair places in NJ...does anybody know any or remember where there are any places? I don't want to send my rim in and ride on the donut for a few days....my donut tire is like a bicycle tire...way too embarrassing and limiting (no taking hard turns, no speeds over 50mph, etc.)...I can't handle it. Any help is appreciated.

Eh, I guess it was my stupidity. I turned too sharp. I always have a tough time with that drive-through...I'm always afraid that one day I'm going to hit the stupid curb because it's a really tall curb and it's narrow and twisty, and I finally hit it.

LIke I said u should complaint to that KFC place, I've done it 2x alreayd for getting wrong orders or cold chicken etc.. and I've gotten compinsated in good ways not best though but what u can do eh! Ouch. Sorry to hear about that. One of the previous owners of my car must have done a lot of this, because almost every rim looks like that!

I have one question - if you always have trouble with that drive-through and you were always afraid that you were going to hit the curb, then why didn't you just park the car and walk in to the KFC??? Sorry, I just couldn't resist.

jrt67, that is a good question. But I like just staying in my car rather than walking in and getting the stuff, especially since it's freaking 10 degrees F outside right now. Oh well, not going to KFC anymore....that shit is bad for me anyways lol.

Lomo, the G35C does not suffer from any blind spots at all. I came from a Jetta (4-door sedan that had great vision all around) and I had absolutely no blind spot or visibility issues compared to the Jetta.

Thanks for the sympathy, guys. I was actually thinking about buying some silver paint and just painting over it, hahaha. No, but everything is going to work out. This guy in NYC is going to find a great wheel repair place for me (NYC is 15 minutes from me) who can fix it. I am just going to drop my car off in NYC and pick it up when it's done (hopefully within the same day). I already have a friend who is willing to take me out of NYC and back so I'm all set!

Ouchh!!! That hurts! I would have gone back at night and demolish that curb! [fake]

Anyway, I recommend you touch those up with JB Weld, which sets to a hard metal-like hardness. If you do it neatly, you'll have very little to sand, then touch up with Wurth silver paint for rims. It's possible to do a good job but it won't be perfect. Though you won't notice it from far, better than it is now.

Of course, if you spend the money and have someone fix it professionally, that would be the best solution.

Thanks for the advice and sympathy. Frankly, I'm not all that bothered by it because it is not so obvious (the picture I showed you guys obviously highlights them, but in-person it's not so bad), and I know I can get it fixed. Cosmos Black, I was thinking about doing something along the lines of what you said, but I figure that the cost in materials is more worth putting it into getting the rim fixed professionally for only like $80 - $100.
Tweet, I don't know what place is going to be recommended to me yet, but I'm sure there are a number of places in NYC that can help you. My plan is to drive my car into the city with my friend following me, drop the car off and have him drive me back home (in the morning). Then whent he car is ready (later in the day), have my friend take me back into NYC to pickup my car. Once the place (whatever place it is) does my rim and assuming I am satisfied with their work, I will give you all the info and exactly how much the service costs.

When I lived downtown (Atlanta) I had to parallel park in front of my house, as that was the only place to park. I scuffed my wheels like that a few times until I learned exactly where my wheel was. It was an old neighborhood, with taller than normal concrete curbs.. Don't think I ever got it fixed, but then again they were crappy ole OEM rims on a POS ride..

How much is that going to cost you to get buffed out? (Just curious)

but i feel your pain, during the first week w/ my car, i hit a curb while taking a right turn into my school. while reminding myself, 'take the turn wide so you won't hit the curb' nothing like a fresh scratch on a brand new ride!! ugh

haven't hit anything else since, but it's bound to happen, but it sucks to hear it none the less.

i still see that you refuse to get winter boots, how are the pilots in the 10F weather? anyway, i hope everything works out without paying up the butt for the repairs. btw, i'm trying to picture the back end of your g w/ the doughnut on your rear left.. well good luck.

Section_8, once I find out where I'm taking my car and I get the job done, I'll post all the information (including cost) and an "after" picture so you guys can see for yourself if they did a good job or not.

Jae, purchased or leased, the car still belongs to me and I will do whatever it takes to keep it running its best.
As for the Pilot Sports in winter weather, they are much worse than I ever thought they could be. For the past week, it has been between 2 F and all the way up to 30 F (no snow, though), and the tires have been absolutely awful. I can't punch it in 1st gear in this cold weather because the rear tires lose traction and start spinning after about 4,000rpm. And this traction loss has strongly affected its handling....I can't take the turns nearly as aggressively as I could during the summer....it feels like I am driving a lesser car, honestly. I refused to get the snow tires because I didn't want to take the dry-road performance hit that snow tires offer, but now I'm thinking that Blizzak LM-22's and Wintersport M3's supposedly offer such good dry-road performance (along with snow traction), that they will probably out-perform the Pilot Sports in the cold weather anyways !!

I have the Pilots also and agree with you on the slippage in the cold. Then on one sunny day I saw the sheet of salt all over the road and realized that was probably a major hindering factor here. I don’t know if NJ has the same problem but right now I’m just trying to make through the winter without get hit by someone overestimating the ability of themselves and/or their car and sliding into me. Another concern is getting stuck and (fingers crossed) it hasn’t happened so far they have been pretty good in the snow..
Getting back to your rim, I bought some BMW style 33 last year that I got a great deal on; one had a scrape like yours but the space in the middle was also scratched. I called The Wheel Exchange they picked up and dropped of at my friend’s shop. They did a good job, you can see where they welded it but you really have to look for it. (FYI)

When dealing with my car I always look at what could happen to my car and compare it to the sacrifice I will take and normally my car wins. I always park in the back of parking lots or in a space near an island and even though it’s freezing here and people laugh at me for parking my car in the back of the parking lot, I won’t come and see that some idiot carelessly opened their door and hit my car. Yes it’s freezing but I can warm up. The little things make a BIG difference. GOOD LUCK

Ghost, I completely agree with you on "its the little things that count". My dad always complains that I'm always nit-picking over my car because I'm always having it washed, checking tire pressures and fluid levels, parking very carefully, etc. but it's all the worth it in the end....nothing like a clean, shiny, smooth-running car.
I have heard of The Wheel Exchange and I am going to look into it. I am just waiting for the call-back from this one guy who can help me out...I want to talk to him and try to have to make the wheel repair process as easy as possible. I have no hesitation for $100 or so it will cost to fix, it's just a matter of dropping my car off and getting rides back and forth, etc.
